Young adult Detroiters can hone their skills on IBM or Apple computers, learn to surf the Internet and receive job placement assistance – all while getting paid to do so, thanks to a free training program sponsored by the Wayne State University Word Processing Training Center through the department of computer science.

      The next computer training session begins Aug. 22. Classes are held Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Training Center , which is located at 2727 Second Avenue, near Wayne State ’s main campus in Detroit. Students can earn monetary incentives for attendance and performance, as well as receive supportive services for lunch and transportation.

      Participants of the program must be Detroit residents, low income, have a high school diploma or GED and be 19-21. To register call (313) 964-4807.

      The program features hands-on training on IBM and Apple computers. Participants also receive training in current software programs such as: Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Mac OS X and Internet browsers.

      Other training classes include: typing; dictation and transcription, office procedures and employment search skills.  Following graduation, the program participants are given assistance in finding employment.

       This training program is funded in part by the Michigan Department of Career Development and the City of Detroit Employment and Training Department.  A Michigan Works! Agency.

       Since its inception 24 years ago, Wayne State ’s Word Processing Training Center has been a source for providing qualified employees to more than 1,000 companies throughout metro Detroit .
