"American Stakes in Afghanistan" with Ambassador Peter Tomsen

Wayne State University's Detroit Council of World Affairs (DCWA) and BBK will host a discussion May 6 titled "American Stakes in Afghanistan" featuring Ambassador Peter Tomsen. The event will be held at the Troy Marriott, 200 W. Big Beaver Rd., at 6 p.m. A complimentary dinner will be served. Please RSVP to Kris Yurgin Cummings at (313) 577-8270 or ap0606@wayne.edu by April 29. Seating is limited.

Tomsen was President George Bush Sr.\'s Special Envoy and Ambassador to Afghanistan from1989-1992. He retains close ties with today\'s Afghan leaders, including President Hamid Karzai. Tomsen was one of the last Westerners to meet with Commander Ahmad Shah Massoud before his assassination in an Al Qaeda plot.  After serving three years as U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, he retired from the Foreign Service in 1998. He has been called to address Afghan issues in numerous TV and radio shows, lectures around the country and has participated in House and Senate hearings on Afghanistan.

During his Detroit visit, Tomsen will address why it is important for the United States and the international community to persevere in helping Afghanistan to recover from a quarter century of foreign invasion, extremism, internal conflict and narcotics production.

Tomsen's lecture is the third of a three-part series on South Asia co-sponsored by DCWA and BBK. DCWA is a program within the Center for Peace & Conflict Studies at Wayne State University. For more than a quarter century, DCWA has brought international speakers and presentations to the Detroit community, helping internationalize our important region.
