KNOWLEDGE ROAD SHOW – FACULTY LECTURE SERIES WITH ART HISTORY PROF. DORA APEL

About the speaker: Join us for a thought-provoking and insightful lecture based on her book Imagery of Lynching by Wayne State University art history professor Dora Apel followed by a guided tour of the Without Sanctuary exhibition at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Apel's book contests this adopted stance of ignorance. She will show how the visual documentation of such crimes can be a central vehicle for both constructing and challenging racial hierarchies. She'll also examine not only how lynching was often orchestrated explicitly for the camera and how these images circulated on postcards, but also how they eventually were appropriated by anti-lynching forces and artists from the 1930s to the present. Also, take a self-tour of the newly renovated main exhibit during this outstanding event.

Time: 2 p.m. Date: Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005 Location: Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History 315 E. Warren Ave. Detroit, Mich. Cost: $12.50 members, $15 nonmembers

The fun begins when the young actor discovers that his apartment is haunted by the ghost of Barrymore, who comes back from the grave to dispense advice on Shakespearean acting, not to mention life and love. An elegant champagne reception at intermission with an array of decadent chocolate treats highlights this ever popular event.
