Detroit businesses offer discounts to Wayne State employees and students

Detroit, MI - Detroit businesses increasingly are joining a new marketing program to offer discounts to Wayne State University's 33,000 students and 8,000 employees using their WSU OneCard, a student and employee identification card.

The idea of the program, which is called "Show Your OneCard and Save," is to promote the businesses while encouraging students and employees, who are in the Midtown area regularly, to spend money in Detroit. To date, 25 area businesses have committed to the program for one year. They are Agave, Avalon International Breads, Blimpies, Century Grille, Detroit Tigers, Elwood Bar and Grill, Garden Bowl, Harry's Detroit, Holiday Inn Express, Hotel St. Regis, International Mini Café, La Dolce Vita, Majestic Café, Meetery Eatery, Mr. Mike's, New Detroit Science Center, Pure Detroit, Quizno's, Sgt. Pepperoni's, Showtime Clothing, Traffic Jam and Snug, Utrecht, Vera Jane, The Inn on Ferry Street and The Whitney.

WSU students and employees who show their OneCard receive discounts from 10 to 50 percent. The Detroit Tigers organization was first on base with the program, offering 50-percent off upper deck box seats from Monday through Wednesday during the past baseball season. The Tigers eliminated Boston Red Sox games from the package, but expanded their promotion for next year to also include Thursday games.

Organizations that commit to the program are promoted heavily on campus, including brochures, fliers and signage in high-traffic campus locations, information in student and employee newsletters, and inclusion on the university's Web site, wayne.edu.
