Higher education in Canada is not as affordable as many assumed, study concludes

The price of higher education in Canada is not as much of a bargain as it used to be, according to a new report that compares public-university affordability in Canada and the United States. While the average cost in Canada is about 25 percent less than in the United States, American students receive 30 percent more in grant aid and have access to significantly more student loans than do Canadian students. "Canadians who assume that their university system is more affordable than the American system may be surprised to find out that the net cost of a university education in Canada is in striking distance of the U.S. net cost," according to the report which was commissioned by the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation and produced by the Educational Policy Institute. The report also revealed that the out-of-pocket expenses that a student and family must cover in Canada are higher than those in the U.S.
