Bri and Sheila were a normal British couple until the birth of their daughter, Joe. After the discovery that little Joe would never have a personality and live as a "parsnip," the young couple tries to live with the situation by creating personalities for Joe, resorting to humor and fantasy to lighten a heavy burden and get through another day. British playwright Peter Nichols wrote A Day in the Death of Joe Egg in 1966 and it was first staged in 1967. A Day in the Death of Joe Egg won two Tony Awards in 1985, Best Revival of a Play and Best Actress, Stockard Channing for her portrayal of Sheila.
