Wayne State's Merrill-Palmer Institute has tuition award programs for employees and students that need child care

Merrill-Palmer Institute's Child Development Laboratory (CDL) is encouraging Wayne State employees and students with children ages 2 1/2 to 5 to take advantage of the MSRP (Michigan School Readiness Program) grant program that will reduce their day care costs.

Undergraduate students who receive the Pell Grant may qualify for a CCAMPIS (Child Care Access Means Parents In School) grant to get reduced tuition for their children to attend the CDL for preschool.

The CDL program reflects current theory and research in the Reggio Emilia approach, which has generated great enthusiasm among parents, teachers and educators throughout the early childhood community. The Reggio approach views young children as strong, resourceful and curious with the capacity to devise their own learning at their own pace. Reggio supports that inherent capacity with a "negotiated curriculum."

"The teacher pays close attention to the interest of children, and uses their interest as a vehicle to guide their learning," said Merrill-Palmer's Associate Director Gail Brumitt. The CDL was recently renovated this past summer to further enhance the quality of the program.

"We're really excited that we had the opportunity to renovate the center and we're excited about the new center and new program," Brumitt said.

The fee for CDL preschool is $157 per week. The preschool runs from 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The day is split up: Self-selection, large group and small group activities in the morning and enrichment activities in the afternoon. Those interested in enrolling their child in the program can call (313) 873-0724 or 873-1607. For more information about the CDL visit the Merrill-Palmer Institute Web site.
