Timeless classic Macbeth at the Hilberry Theatre

The Hilberry Theatre is proud to follow its classical tradition with William Shakespeare's Macbeth opening at 8:00 p.m. on January 9, 2004.

Touted as the unluckiest of the Bard's dramas by theatrical tradition, Macbeth is a story of treachery and bloodlust steeped in illusion, fantasy, and mystery. The tale follows a man whose drive for power is fueled by supernatural prophecy and an ambitious wife. By murdering the king and taking the crown for himself, he unleashes dark forces that lead to his wife's madness and his own violent death. Shakespeare's Macbeth is a cautionary tale of the repercussions of violence in the pursuit of power.

Director Gillian Eaton describes the Hilberry Theatre's production as "a night play set in a world that is between destruction and construction." This show brings the audience to "a world where there is no comfort, where our imaginations take us to dreadful places and we are contaminated by violence."

Gillian Eaton has made her mark in the theatre world. She has received many awards including the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for acting and directing as well as the Best Actress Award from the Detroit Free Press for her performance of Elizabeth Rex. She also received training with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Eaton's Shakespeare experience coupled with her unique vision of the show will bring a distinctive and memorable performance to the Hilberry Theatre.

The Scottish Play, as Macbeth is often called, was penned by Shakespeare around 1603-1607. Legend and lore surround the origin of this story and the roots of Scottish history. In its nearly 400 years of existence, like the plot, the play has developed a magical quality and many superstitions enveloping each production. This tradition will continue with the Hilberry Theatre.

Macbeth will open on January 9, 2004 and continue in rotating repertory until March 4, 2004.

Ticket prices range $12 - $20, with student rush tickets available the day of the performance for 50% off the regular price. Group discounts are also available.
