DETROIT - Community and civic service; philanthropy; campus and city involvement; volunteerism, loyalty; enthusiasm and excellence. These are characteristics that epitomize all that Tom and Mary Adams have done for Wayne State University and the city of Detroit.
In recognition and gratitude of their support and generosity over the years, the Wayne State University Department of Athletics will dedicate its football field on Saturday, October 11 (noon kickoff) in honor of Tom and Mary Adams. The naming of the field will be a fitting tribute to a family that has dedicated itself to the University, the city of Detroit and their well-being.
"We have played football at Wayne State since 1917, and the accomplishments and service of Tom and Mary Adams is a testament to the legacy of WSU athletics," stated WSU Athletics Director Rob Fournier. "When we discuss the proud history of this University, Tom and Mary Adams have a special significance to what we are and what we aspire to be."
In addition to being a football letter winner, Tom was an officer in the Alumni Association, an elected member of the Board of Governors, a founding member of the Anthony Wayne Society, and a WSU Athletic Hall of Fame and University honoree for leadership, service and athletic excellence.
Adams number 29 will also be retired, and his name and the stories of his achievements -- as an athlete, a businessman and civic-minded Detroiter -- will inspire Wayne State student-athletes for years to come. Tom Adams is more than just a larger-than-life hero on Wayne State's campus. He served his country as a Navy pilot, and exemplified qualities of service and leadership during his years in the corporate community.
Tom (BA, Liberal Arts, 1944) and Mary (BA, Liberal Arts, 1942) Adams' ties to Wayne State University are strong. They met in a freshman English class when they were both 19 and married after his discharge from the service in 1945.
Both Tom and Mary have been energetic and loyal boosters of the university. As a team they have worked hard for the benefit of their alma mater and the city of Detroit.
Tom and Mary will not be able to make the dedication because of health concerns, however Janice Adams, Tom and Mary's eldest daughter will be in attendance along with her daughter, Dara. Tom and Mary's other two daughters, Julie and Kathleen, were also unable to attend.
