Gerontology Institute at Wayne State offers opportunity for older artists to express how the arts enhance quality of life

The Gerontology Institute at Wayne State University is seeking submissions of creative works by nonprofessional artists 55 years of age and older. Submissions will be displayed at the fifth annual "Art of Aging Successfully" Conference on March 25, 2004.

The annual arts initiative is aimed at demonstrating how creative expressions contribute to an enhanced quality of life for older citizens, according to Jennifer Mendez, associate director for education with the institute. "While this is not a contest, it is a great opportunity for public recognition of one's artistic talents," she points out.

Entries in the following categories are being accepted:

Visual arts: Include a photo of the work along with a title. Submit a 100-word or less description of your craft and how it contributes to quality of life. Photos will not be returned.

· The written word: Submit a 250-word or less memoir, journal excerpt, oral history or poem reflecting the benefits of energizing the mind and/or body in aging successfully.

· Musical talent: Submit a 100-word or less description of how singing, playing or composing music energizes the mind and body. Enclose a three-minute audio recording on tape or compact disk and be sure to title any original compositions. Tapes and CDs will not be returned.

Following are guidelines for submissions: Only one entry per category will be accepted. All submissions will be considered and a representative sampling will be showcased at the conference. All entrants will be recognized in the program booklet.
