The Hilberry Theatre on the campus of Wayne State University begins the 2001 - 2002 season with Moliere's Learned Ladies, a witty romp of rhyme and reason, opening October 5 and playing in rotating repertory until December 8.
Philosophy rules in this family comedy, where the most outrageous characters pride themselves on the powers of the mind rather than the strength of the heart. Their imperfections come through as they ridicule each other in love. Learned Ladies captures the intellectual fervor which swept the late 18th century while also satirizing the pseudointellectuals of this endearing family.
The Hilberry Theatre's production of Learned Ladies is directed by Greg Trzaskoma, a Hilberry MFA Acting graduate (1997), who is making his Hilberry stage directorial debut. Some of Greg Trzaskoma's many local directing credits include The King and I with the Warren Civic Theatre, where he is also Founder and Artistic Director, and Conversations With My Father (Best Play Nominee, The Oakland Press), Diary of Ann Frank, Word, and Dear Esther with the Jewish Ensemble Theatre.
The Hilberry Theatre is located on the campus of Wayne State University at the corner of Cass and Hancock in Detroit. Performances are scheduled Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. with matinees on selected Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. (various dates from October 5 - December 8). Tickets range in price from $12 - $20, with student rush tickets available the day of the performance for $7. Coupon books are on sale and group discounts are also available. For tickets and further information, please call the Wayne State University Theatre box office at (313) 577-2972 or visit the WSU Theatre website at www.theatre.wayne.edu.
