New regional transportation authority: pipe dream or practical solution?
The top executives of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties and the city of Detroit have announced intentions to cooperate in forming a new regional transportation authority to provide more efficient transportation. A rapid bus system, possibly combined with light rail, is one possibility that has been mentioned. As the regional mass-transportation story unfolds, Wayne State has professors who can offer perspectives on the developments, including political hurdles and the pros and cons of such a system in a metro area where the automobile is king.
Will the Middle East explode? How important is the region to the U.S.?
The latest fragile cease-fire in the Middle East is hanging by a thread that could snap at any time. There has been speculation that any new, major confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians could plunge the Mideast into another war, possibly leading to involvement by major powers. What's next in that volatile region? WSU has experts in international relations who can help interpret political developments, including their impact on the United States.
