The Wayne State University's Department of Theatre, Black Theatre Program presents Before It Hits Home at the Bonstelle Theatre

Opening January 21 at the Bonstelle Theatre, Before It Hits Home by Cheryl L. West explores how people and families change and grow when outside situations hit home. Winner of the 1992 Helen Hayes Award for best new play, this production is presented by the Theatre Department and the Black Theatre Program of Wayne State University. Before lt Hits Home is a moving and authentic presentation of a compassionate and painful story based on the universal themes of home and family.

Wendel is an African-American jazz musician who isolates parts of his life in fear of rejection. Struggling to balance the separate worlds of his personal, professional and family lives, the conflicting aspects collide when Wendel realizes he has AIDS. Wendel makes the issues of child abandonment, bisexuality, and disease a reality for his family when he seeks sanctuary at home.

Before It Hits Home is presented by the Black Theatre Program at Wayne State University. The mission of the Black Theatre Program is to provide experience in black culture for 'both the university and community. The productions of the Black Theatre Program strive to inspire and encourage society away from negative social behavior by presenting positive and creative alternatives. Before It Hits Home highlights African-American family life and serves as a wake-up call to the black community about AIDS.

Before It Hits Home is directed by Jerry Cleveland, director of the recent production of Laughter on the 23rd Floor at the Hilberry Theatre. An associate professor of the Wayne State University Theatre Department, Mr. Cleveland has
directed several productions and written four children's plays that were produced as touring shows for WSU and Hampton University.

The Bonstelle Theatre at Wayne State University is dedicated to producing the best in quality university theatre. Before It Hits Home opens January 21 and plays the weekends of the January 22 - 23 and January 28 - 30. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $8 to $10. Group rates are also available.
