Local residents honored by Women of Wayne for their achievements

Several Wayne State University graduates will be recognized May 1 at the 33rd annual Headliner Awards Luncheon sponsored by the Women of Wayne (WOW) at the Detroit Yacht Club. Honorary chair of this year's event is Helen Thomas (liberal arts, 1942), White House bureau chief for United Press International. Reservations can be made by calling (313) 577-2166 by April 26.

Headliner Awards will be presented to alumnae whose achievements have rated headlines in the media. Those honored this year include Nancy Bacon of Bloomfield Hills (business, 1968), senior vice president of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc.; Dorothy Deremo of Northville (nursing 1974, 1976), president and CEO of Hospice of Michigan; Geraldine Lester of Franklin (education, 1960), founding board member of Metro Detroit Gilda's Club; and L. Kimberly Peoples of Detroit (education 1970,1987), director of Golightly Career and Technical Center.

The Service Award will be presented to Marti Kunze Miller of Grosse Pointe Woods (liberal arts, 1959), who holds a master of arts as a speech major with work in radio and television. Miller has been a member of the WOW Board of Directors since 1986 and has served as the president; vice president of the Eastern Region; newsletter editor; and recording secretary. She has served as president of the Grosse Pointe chapter and has chaired numerous WOW committees.

Highlighter Awards will be presented to three attorneys who have been elected presidents of their local bar associations: Kelly Allen of Bloomfield Hills (law, 1983), president-elect of the Oakland County Bar Association; Lisa Sewell DeMoss of St. Clair Shores (law, 1977), president of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association for Wayne County; and Lori Finazzo of Clinton Township (liberal arts, 1983, law, 1986), president of the Macomb Bar Association.
