Local resident wins prize in public speaking contest at Wayne State

Joanne Hooks of Detroit won first place in the Martin Luther King Jr. Public Speaking Contest held recently at Wayne State University. Hooks, an English major, received $300 cash plus a $200 scholarship. The civil rights speaking contest was open to all Wayne State students and was part of the university's first weeklong symposium honoring the work of King. Second place went to public relations major Kristie Negro of St. Clair Shores, who received a $100 gift certificate to the university bookstore. Third place went to public relations major Matt Price of Brighton, who also received a $100 gift certificate to the university bookstore.
