Professor Ronald Aronson of Huntington Woods and Distinguished Professor Joseph Grano of Grosse Pointe Park are this year's inductees into the Wayne State University Academy of Scholars.
The academy was established in 1979 to recognize excellence in scholarship and the creative achievement of faculty. Appointment to the academy is the highest recognition that can be bestowed upon faculty members by their colleagues. Members are chosen from the most productive and widely recognized scholars at the university.
Aronson, a professor in the interdisciplinary studies program in the College of Lifelong Learning, received his bachelor's degree in history from WSU and holds master's and doctoral degrees from Brandeis University.
A leading scholar on Jean-Paul Sartre and existentialism, Aronson has served as executive director of Sartre Studies International and as a member of the executive committee of the Sartre Society of North America. He also has served as chair and co-chair of the society.
Aronson is author of five books and editor of two others. He has written 16chapters in a variety of critical books on Sartre and 23 journal articles.
He has taught at the University of Western Cape in South Africa and lectured at University College in London. He joined WSU in 1968 as an assistant professor and was named full professor in 1983. Prior to that Aronson held teaching assignments at Rutgers University, Monmouth College and Hunter College.
Grano, a distinguished professor in the WSU Law School, received bachelor's and law degrees from Temple University and holds a master's of law degree from the University of Illinois.
A scholar of the Miranda Decision, Grano is the author of Confessions, Truth and the Law (University of Michigan Press, 1993) and 19 articles regarding Miranda and confessions, free will, the Fourth Amendment and concerns for truth, and the conviction of the innocent.
Grano has made presentations at more than 50 conferences and seminars and has testified before the U.S. and state senates' judiciary committees.
Grano joined the university in 1975 and was named a distinguished professor in1984. Prior to joining the Wayne State faculty he held positions at the University of Detroit and he was a visiting professor at Temple University, University of Illinois, Cornell University, and the University of California-Berkeley.
