Recently, he was honored by Crain's Detroit Business as one of the region's top 40 leaders younger than 40. On Thursday, he'll be inducted into the Athletes With Disabilities Hall of Fame at the Troy Marriott. Several of Bernstein's other accomplishments are mentioned in the article, which is accompanied by a photo taken in his office. Democrats sweep races for state school board, university boards

Democrats in Michigan swept the election for the Wayne State University Board of Governors, University of Michigan Board of Regents, Michigan State University Board of Trustees, and the State Board of Education. WSU Board of Governors The winners in the WSU race were Debbie Dingell, wife of U.S. Rep. John Dingell, and incumbent Eugene Driker, giving Democrats a 7-1 majority on the board. Driker was one of the board's two incumbents seeking another term. Republican Elizabeth Hardy did not run for re-election. State Board of Education Casandra UIbrich, a WSU alumna and development director, won election to the state Board of Education. She was one of 11 candidates for the two open seats. Democrats outnumber Republicans 6-2 on the state board. U-M Board of Regents Incumbent Kathy White, a WSU law professor, won another term on the U-M Board of Regents, increasing the number of Democrats from 5-3 to 6-2.

Worrying about the least of these

In this week's column, Lessenberry expresses concern for the plight of foster children in Michigan who have nowhere to go once they "age out" of the foster care system. He references a Wayne State University study that found that such youths who did find work earned an average of $5,400 annually. Nearly half of them had been homeless, and more than half were on some form of public assistance. He said neither candidate for governor has addressed the issue during the campaign.

WSU launches oral history DVD project to record family stories

The Office of Undergraduate Research at Wayne State is recording stories of how families of Detroiters arrived in the area. The recordings will become part of an archive at the university. Some of the stories could be chosen to be the subject matter of an original play and others may be included in a documentary about Detroit.
