BET Conference aims to help African-American women improve their health

The BET Foundation will bring its Women\'s Health Symposium, "Remembering Our Health," to Wayne State University Saturday. The symposium was designed to help reduce health disparities among African-American women through education. It will include panel discussions, health screenings, a morning workout, cooking demonstrations, nutritional workshops and prizes. Grammy-winning gospel singer Vickie Winans will be emcee, and there will be a special performance by R&B songstress Deborah Cox.

Another gaffe for DPS: Kids' secrets left to rot

Gerald Shiener, psychiatrist in the WSU School of Medicine, comments in a story about the psychological records of thousands of Detroit Public Schools students found in a deserted warehouse near the Michigan Central Rail Depot. \"Patients have to be confident that their most inner thoughts and feelings will be safeguarded,\" he said. \"It inhibits the patient\'s ability to speak honestly if they can\'t be sure that those thoughts remain confidential.\"

Goal: 1,200 new Detroit-area businesses in 3 years

The Kauffman Foundation has launched a $9.25 million initiative to find and cultivate 800 Detroit-area aspiring entrepreneurs in efforts to help the region develop a new economic base, said program organizer Judy Johncox, director of business services for Wayne State University\'s TechTown business incubator. The third and final session of TechTown's inaugural FastTrac to the Future program will be held Aug. 18. This AP story was picked up by numerous media.

TechTown center of $2.4B battery investment from feds that could create 6,800 jobs in next 18 months

Wayne State's TechTown is featured in an article about Vice President Joe Biden\'s announcement of Michigan\'s $2.4-billion federal grant program designed to spur manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles. Backed by Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health System and General Motors Co. TechTown is offering a range of start-up services to 98 small businesses.
