Former Ford CFO goes back to school

The Wayne State University Board of Governors voted unanimously Tuesday to select Allan D. Gilmour, former chief finance officer at Ford Motor Co., as interim president. WSU Board of Governors chair Richard Bernstein comments in both stories. Gilmour believes WSU\'s teaching, research, and community-service efforts \"will certainly help\" economically depressed Detroit to recover, and is particularly enthusiastic about TechTown, which is now working with about 150 start-ups. cfo.com/article.cfm/14516824/c_14516800 pridesource.com/article.html?article=42699

Wayne State program will mark 25 years of excellence in journalism diversity

Wayne State's Journalism Institute for Media Diversity (JIM) started in 1984 in response to the need for diversity in newsrooms and other media outlets. \"Back then, minorities weren\'t represented well, and there was a huge pool of racial and ethnic talent in the metro Detroit area so we said, \'Why don\'t we just train them?\'\" said Ben Burns, director of journalism at WSU and former executive editor of the Detroit News. Burns also noted that JIM students in general have been quite successful in the journalism field and beyond. Journalism professor and current JIM director Alicia Nails is also quoted.

Michigan Secretary of State candidates push organ donation

Law professor Jocelyn Benson, who is also the Democratic candidate for Secretary of State, proposed this week that branch office clerks should be mandated to ask customers if they want to join the organ registry. Benson, along with other candidates, feels it would boost state participation in organ donation. http://www.mlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2010/08/michigan_secretary_of_state_ca.html http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100813/NEWS06/8130385/1008/News06/Wildlife-river-recovering-after-Michigan-oil-spill&template=fullarticle

Former Detroit police chief used text messages as leverage to get job back, say city officials

Wayne State law professor Peter Henning commented about reports that former Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans recently made an attempt to get back his job by exposing personal text messages between the department's interim chief and a lieutenant whom Evans is currently dating. Henning says he is troubled by the exchange, even though he does not believe an attempt was made to extort the city. "It probably comes close to the line," said Henning. "It is saying to a government official, here's what we need to do to keep information secret so that a former official can get his job back."

Until her deposition Carlita Kilpatrick has never faced questions about long running rumors

Wayne State University law professor Peter Henning commented in a story about reports that Carlita Kilpatrick, wife of former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, will likely assert her 5th Amendment rights to avoid incriminating herself during depositions involving the alleged Manoogian Mansion party case. Henning says Carlita Kilpatrick is taking a risk in doing that. "Whenever a witness asserts the 5th Amendment, there's this idea that where there's smoke there's fire. And that there must be something else going on here. Whether that's in fact the case, it certainly would put Mrs. Kilpatrick under a great deal more suspicion as to what happened with regard not only to the party, but the events after that."

Wayne State University board elects Allan Gilmour interim president

The Wayne State University Board of Governors voted unanimously today to select Allan D. Gilmour, former chief finance officer at Ford Motor Co., as interim president. "Allan is one of those people who comes to us at the right time at the right place," said WSU Board of Governors chair Richard Bernstein. Gilmour said in his acceptance speech. \"I\'ve done research on Wayne State, and one of the things I\'ve learned is that it\'s a powerhouse research university. Research is the key to turning around this area.\" His goals are continuing the success of the university's research initiatives, its community engagement and creating a collaborative culture on campus. Board members Paul Massaron and Debbie Dingell are quoted in the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News articles respectively. Numerous media outlets nationwide ran versions of the story. http://detnews.com/article/20100810/SCHOOLS/8100388/Gilmour-named-WSU-s-interim-president http://www.freep.com/article/20100810/NEWS01/100810026/1318/Former-Ford-CFO-named-WSU-interim-president http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20100809/FREE/100809879 http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=2785&DateTime=8%2F10%2F2010+7%3A05%3A56+AM&Term=wayne+state&PlayClip=TRUE http://www.clickondetroit.com/education/24580086/detail.html http://topics.philly.com/topic/Ford_Motor_Company http://www.vcstar.com/news/2010/aug/10/wayne-st-names-former-ford-exec-interim/?partner=RSS http://hosted2.ap.org/MIROY/HOMEMI/Article_2010-08-10-Wayne%20State-President/id-ef5ad79acfc64b92bea26b98db2041d1 http://www.upi.com/Top_News/Local/2010/08/10/Allan-Gilmour-Unanimously-Elected-WSU-Interim-President/17-2cee776bb8 http://www2.wjtv.com/jtv/ap_exchange/business/article/wayne-st-names-former-ford-exec-interim-president/181063/ http://detnews.com/article/20100810/SCHOOLS/8100388/Gilmour-named-WSU-s-interim-president http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2010/08/former_ford_exec_allan_gilmour.html http://atlanta.bizjournals.com/atlanta/prnewswire/press_releases/national/Michigan/2010/08/10/DC48470 http://baltimore.bizjournals.com/baltimore/prnewswire/press_releases/national/Michigan/2010/08/10/DC48470 http://www.wfmz.com/prnewswire/index.html?prnewsid=201008101230PR_NEWS_USPR_____DC48470

'Gaps are not inevitable'

Howard N. Shapiro, associate vice president for student services and undergraduate affairs at Wayne State, said that over the past two years, the university has made a conscious effort to strengthen its need-based aid program to ease the financial burdens that might lead academically underprepared students to drop out. He noted that the first-to-second-year retention rate for black students rose to 69.6 percent from 56.8 percent from 2007 to 2008, and when the figures for 2009 become available in a month, he hopes they will show additional progress. http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2010/08/10/gaps http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/educationblog/2010/08/fiu_um_nova_among_schools_hono_1.html http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/08/10/AR2010081002535.html http://chronicle.com/blogPost/Whats-the-Matter-with-Wayne/26105/

Brothel ordinance prohibits WSU sorority sisters from living together

Members of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority at Wayne State recently looked into buying a house near the campus where many of the sorority sisters hoped to live. However, they ran into an old Detroit ordinance still on the books which prohibits more than seven or eight women living together. Wayne State's police chief Anthony Holt commented about the 19th century ordinance, and WSU students also offered their reaction.
