SPJ Executive Committee refers Helen Thomas Award decision to full board of directors

The Executive Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists voted Saturday to recommend that the organization retire the Helen Thomas Award for Lifetime Achievement. The recommendation, which will be sent to the full board of directors within the next 10 days for a vote, states that the award will be retired with Thomas' name attached. The retirement will not take effect unless the board votes to accept the recommendation.

Far from border, U.S. detains foreign students

Officials of several universities located within 100 miles of the Canadian frontier told The Chronicle that their foreign students and faculty have experienced few serious problems as a result of the checkpoints, though they now tell students to carry their original documents with them at all times. Among the institutions included is Wayne State University. \"You\'ll always have a quirk here and there or an error now and then, but for the most part, things are working pretty well at the border, and we don\'t have any troubles away from the border at all,\" says Linda Seatts, director of Wayne State\'s Office of International Students and Scholars. \"We\'re just elated about that.\"

Fines could have sunk DMC deal: Improper perks for doctors included lease deals, tickets

The deal to sell Detroit Medical Center to Vanguard Health Systems Inc. almost collapsed last fall when DMC officials began to catalog hundreds of potential incidents of Medicare and Medicaid fraud and possible violations of physician anti-kickback laws. It is noted in the story that about 700 academic physicians of the 2,500 medical staff are employed by Wayne State University's School of Medicine.

Wayne State University receives $10,000 to support Michigan Israel Business Bridge Internships

An announcement was included in the online edition about Wayne State University\'s School of Business Administration receiving $10,000 to award to students who participate in the Michigan Israel Business Bridge internship program. The William Schumer Scholarship provides funding for an MBA intern to work with the Michigan Israel Business Bridge. For the next two years, one outstanding student will be awarded $2,500 each semester along with the option to earn up to six credits for the internship.

President honors local educator for research on injured soldiers

Pamela J. VandeVord, associate professor of biomedical engineering at Wayne State University, was among 85 researchers named by President Obama as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. VandeVord was given the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Her work set out to understand how the pressure from bomb explosions on U.S. troops can affect the brain based on documented cognitive, emotional and attention problems among veterans.
