Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences members take four awards during Michigan Family Medicine Research Day

Four members of the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences received awards for their research during the annual Michigan Family Medicine Research Day.

The event, held virtually May 26, brought together Family Medicine practitioners and researchers from across the state to present their work. Of the 61 presentations, four from WSU received awards.

Masters of Public Health student Feicia Fabris, earned the Best Oral Presentation: Substance Use Disorder Award for research conducted under the direction of Assistant Professor Erin Fadden, Ph.D., M.P.H., “Understanding Stigma Toward Opioid Use Disorders and Harm Reduction Through Community-Driven Ethnographic Comics.”

Medical student Sahar Elmenini earned the Best Poster: COVID-19 Award for research conducted under the direction of Associate Professor April Idalski Carcone, Ph.D., “The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Emerging Adults with Type 1 Diabetes.”

Justin Woo, M.P.H., earned the Best Poster: Patient Care Award for research conducted under the direction of Interim Chair and Professor Jinping Xu, M.D., “Low-Risk Prostate Cancer Treatment Recommendations by Urologists vs. Radiation Oncologists.” 

Research Associate Liying Zhang, Ph.D., earned the Best Poster: Health Equity Award for research involving Associate Professor Steven Korzeniewski, Ph.D.; Assistant Professor Rhonda Dailey, M.D.; Assistant Professor Julie Gleason-Comstock, Ph.D.; and Interim Chair Jinping Xu, M.D., “Family and community environmental factors and sleep in adolescents: A Chinese sample.”
