The winter semester is here — time to hit the ground running! Whether you’re a new student or a seasoned grad student, now’s the time to set the tone for success. Get involved, stay organized and build connections to lay a sturdy foundation.

Here’s a list of tips to help you start strong and make the most of this semester:

1. Organize your schedule

At the start of the semester, add all assignment deadlines and exam dates from each syllabus into your planner. Set reminders a week ahead for each to give yourself time to prepare.

Pro Tip:  Avoiding last-minute stress is the ultimate life hack — stay ahead of those deadlines. Sync your course schedule to a planner or digital calendar so you don’t accidentally double-book your bio lab with Taco Tuesday plans!

2. Set clear goals

It’s important to set clear goals for the semester; write them down to make them tangible.

Pro Tip: Break your goals into smaller, actionable steps and review them weekly to monitor your progress, celebrate wins and adjust as needed. This habit keeps you focused, motivated and ready to tackle challenges head on!

3. Create a study plan

Time blocking is a game-changer. Dedicate specific times each day or week to focused study sessions and review lecture notes within 24 hours to reinforce what you’ve learned. For tougher courses, plan for extra study time to stay on top of the material. Don’t forget—Wayne State’s Academic Success Center also offers one-on-one study skills coaching to help you succeed!

4. Prioritize self-care

A healthy mind and body are essential for academic success. Schedule downtime for relaxation and include physical activities. Even a 20-minute walk or a quick workout at the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Centercan boost your energy and focus, keeping you ready to tackle your studies.

5. Establish connections with your instructors

Drop by your instructor’s office hours during the first two weeks to introduce yourself. Don’t forget to exchange contact information with classmates for group projects or study groups — it’s always good to have a backup plan (especially when you can’t remember what chapter the test covers). Networking isn’t just for landing jobs — it’s your secret ingredient for academic success!

6. Find your study spot
Choose a distraction-free space that helps you focus. Whether it’s the David Adamany Undergraduate Libraryor a quiet corner on campus, having a dedicated spot can boost productivity.

7. Join student organizations

Looking to try something new or meet new people? Stop by the Dean of Students Office to explore student organizations. Joining groups that align with your passions or career goals helps you build a support system and expand your network.

8. Use your resources and stay connected

Take advantage of campus and virtual resources, including the Academic Success Center, Student Success WorkshopsCounseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and the University Library System.
