Wayne State University’s Department of Communication hosted its annual Communication and Journalism Internship Fair Oct. 24, bringing together students, faculty and industry professionals for a day of networking and career-building opportunities.

Held on campus in St. Andrew’s Hall as part of the university’s College to Career initiative, the event aimed to ease students’ transition into the workforce. It offered hands-on learning experiences, access to professional connections and resources to empower students as they pursue careers in media.

“Being in the heart of Detroit gives us access to so many news organizations, so the chance to connect with them and PR firms at the fair was a fantastic opportunity,” said Brian Gornick, a graduate student in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts. “This event also encourages students to stay and work in Detroit, and as the city continues to grow, we want to keep our talent right here.”

Students connected with recruiters from local media outlets, public relations firms and professional organizations, gaining insights into the skills needed for industry success. Through one-on-one conversations with recruiters, students had the chance to ask questions and learn about qualities companies seek in new hires, such as strong writing skills, a passion for news, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

Alicia Nails, internship coordinator and director of the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity, highlighted the importance of real-world experience for students entering the media industry.

“You really cannot prepare for a job that you have not had some exposure to,” she said, “so having an internship is what makes the difference between building a career in this field and not.”

The event drew a range of organizations, including FOX 2, WXYZ-TV Channel 7, WDET, WWJ Newsradio 950, Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, City of Detroit, VVK PR + Creative, 98Forward, DTE Energy, and Report for America.

“With cutbacks in media organizations, it’s not always easy to get representatives to attend, but we press hard, and they always show up for our students,” Nails said. “We also have Wayne State graduates who are now in professional roles, and they come back to share their knowledge and insights with our students.”

Matthew Byrd, a senior film major, valued his experience at the fair.

“I’m glad I came out to find new opportunities,” he said. “I learned a lot, and I’m looking forward to exploring the connections I made.”

“Our Communication and Journalism Internship Fair not only bridges the gap between students and industry leaders but also showcases our dedication to fostering the next generation of media professionals,” said Department of Communication Chair Pradeep Sopory. “The interactions they have today will shape their careers tomorrow, fostering personal growth and a strong workforce for our vibrant city.”
