Wayne State University President Kimberly Andrews Espy, Ph.D., will formally take the presidential oath of office on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023, at 4 p.m. during a ceremony in the Student Center Ballroom.

The Honorable Eric L. Clay of the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit will administer the traditional oath of office to President Espy, who officially began serving as Wayne State’s 13th president on Aug. 1. She is the first woman to serve in the role in the institution’s history.

The Wayne State University Board of Governors voted unanimously on June 30 to elect Dr. Espy as president following a national search. She succeeds M. Roy Wilson, who held the role for the last decade.

Mark Gaffney, chair of the Board of Governors and chair of the presidential search committee, will serve as the event’s master of ceremonies. Speakers will deliver remarks on behalf of the board, the faculty, the student body, the administration, alumni and the search committee.

After the official swearing-in has been completed, President Espy will share brief remarks, and a reception will follow the conclusion of the program.

Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP.
