Wayne State University’s Academy of Teachers (AoT) has selected five faculty members to join its esteemed ranks. Introduced in 2018 by the Office for Teaching and Learning, the Academy of Teachers works to promote the shared value and culture of teaching excellence at WSU by engaging faculty, students and staff in improving the educational experience, and encouraging policies that support teachers and reward effective teaching at all levels.

Additionally, the Academy of Teachers serves as an advisory group to the provost on matters relating to teaching and learning. It also helps assess and promote structures across campus that foster a culture of teaching and learning.

The 2021-22 Academy of Teachers inductees are:

• Peter Hoffmann, professor and chair of physics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
• Christopher Nazelli, senior lecturer of mathematics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
• Nicole Coleman, assistant professor of German in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
• Silvia Giorgini-Althoen, senior lecturer and director of Italian language courses in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
• Doug Risner, professor of dance in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts

Now with 17 members, the Academy of Teachers represents Wayne State’s rich array of teaching and learning environments, which include traditional, hybrid and online classrooms, as well as studios and lab settings. Members can self-nominate or be nominated by their peers based on evidence of instructional excellence, leadership and impact on the WSU undergraduate learning experience.
