Election Day Nov. 4 saw Wayne State University Board of Governor incumbent Shirley Stancato retain her seat, and the election of a new board member, former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land.

Given COVID-19 restrictions, a traditional swearing in ceremony was unable to be held, however Stancato and Land have both taken the oath of office.

The new look board will hold its first meeting on Jan. 29.

Stancato, who for almost 20 years served as president and chief executive officer of New Detroit Inc., was appointed to the board in December 2019 when Kim Trent resigned to work for the state of Michigan.

“As a first generation, two-time alumna of Wayne State, it is my honor to give back to the institution that gave me so much,” said Stancato. “Our graduation rate has made significant improvement, but there is still a lot of hard work to be done, including trying to keep tuition affordable during these challenging budget times exacerbated by the pandemic. I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and administration to ensure that Wayne State continues to be an institution of access and opportunity for generations to come.”

Land has had a long career serving in various political roles, including as Secretary of State from 2003-2010. She also served as the Kent County Clerk from 1992-2000.

“I ran for the Wayne State University Board of Governors because my passion is helping people pursue their purpose,” said Land. “I am excited to begin the work of supporting our students, faculty and staff in all they do to accomplish the mission of this great university. In particular, I will do what I can to help our students graduate on time, free of excessive debt, and armed with the knowledge and skills to achieve their dreams and become citizens for the world.”

The board consists of eight members elected for eight-year terms.
