Live Cuban jazz featured on WDET’s ‘This Island Earth’ Oct. 24

Tune into WDET's This Island Earth on Oct. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. as some of Detroit's finest jazz artists join forces with Cuban percussionist Pepe Espinosa to explore the intersection of Cuban rhythms and American jazz.

As the pandemic continues to put in-person concerts on hold, WDET-FM 101.9 brings the live music to its listeners.

In partnership with the Detroit Jazz Festival and the Wayne State University Jazz Studies program, WDET-FM 101.9 will broadcast a set played live from The Dirty Dog Café of the Detroit Jazz Festival All-Stars’ American Songbook II: A Taste of Havana. Tune in Oct. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. for this special live event on WDET’s This Island Earth with hosts Ismael Ahmed and Sam Beaubien.

The Detroit-Havana jazz project features Wayne State’s Chris Collins — Valade Endowed Chair in Jazz, professor and director of jazz studies — and Cuban percussionist Pepe Espinosa. The performance also features Cuban musicians and select WSU students, in an artistic bridge between Cuban and American jazz artists.
