Wayne State University is making it easier for current students with merit scholarships to qualify for funding renewal for the 2020-2021 academic year. This temporary measure is part of the university’s response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“We understand how important merit funding is for many of our students,” said Provost Keith Whitfield. “During this unprecedented time, we must respond with compassion to our students who rely on these scholarships to move them forward toward a Wayne State degree.”

The temporary policy change applies to the following awards: President’s, Warrior, Gold, Detroit Leadership, Green, Scholar, Anthony Wayne Scholarship, Scholars Day, Honor’s Dean, Warrior Transfer, Gold Transfer, Green Transfer, Pathway and Born to Be a Warrior.

In order to remain eligible for the scholarships, students must meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP) standards. SAP standards include earning a cumulative 2.0 GPA and completing of 67% of all attempted coursework in their degree program.

“We recognize the extraordinary challenges our students may be facing during this time,” said Dawn Medley, associate vice president of Enrollment Management. “The university wants to alleviate some of the pressure students are experiencing by allowing them to breathe easier about multiple renewal requirements.”

The Office of Student Financial Aid will contact students after winter grades have been posted with more information about their award renewal status.

“We don’t want students to suffer consequences from this emergency,” replied Cathy Kay, senior director of Financial Aid. “The financial aid office will continue to be here to support students in every way we can.”
