Wayne State Department of Chemistry will set world record for largest periodic table

Wayne State chemistry students unfurl the periodic table element symbol for tungsten.

WHAT:

Wayne State University's Department of Chemistry will set the world record for the largest periodic table. Spanning more than three football fields in size, the table is the result of a collaboration with student chemistry clubs from Wayne State, UM-Dearborn, UM-Flint, University of Detroit Mercy and Lawrence Tech.

WHEN:

Wednesday, Oct. 23 "Mole Day"
•    9 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Table set up
•    1 - 2 p.m. Table complete
•    2 - 6 p.m. Clean up table

WHERE:

Wayne State Intramural Athletics Fields - Corner of Trumbull and Warren Aves.

WHY:

Celebrated annually on Oct. 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m., Mole Day commemorates "Avogadro's Number" (6.02 x 1023), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Mole Day also typically falls during National Chemistry Week.

This year, National Chemistry Week celebrates the "International Year of the Periodic Table."

More info: Several Wayne State chemists will be on hand for comment and interviews throughout the day.
