Engage with TRIO this month

Wayne State students, faculty and staff — as well as members of the surrounding community – are invited to engage with WSU’s Office of Federal TRIO as part of National TRIO Week later this month. The office will host a pair of events:

On the Road with TRIO – Tuesday, Feb. 26

TRIO will host On the Road with TRIO, a meet-and-greet event at the Student Center Building, Hilberry A and B, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26. Guests are invited to meet TRIO staff and learn more about the office’s programs and initiatives. “Travelers” will receive a “passport” containing questions and information to obtain from each TRIO program – the “states.” The goal is for travelers to visit each “state” and answer the provided questions to earn a travel award at their final destination. Have fun, network and explore the world of TRIO! The event is free and refreshments will be served. RSVP at ontheroadwithtrio.eventbrite.com.

National TRIO Day of Service – Thursday, Feb. 28

Staff and friends of TRIO will partner with The W Food Pantry for the National TRIO Day of Service on Thursday, Feb. 28. Volunteers will work at the pantry and at the Academic/Administrative Building throughout the day. TRIO is seeking nonperishable food donations, which can be dropped off at either location between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. For a list of preferred donation items and to learn more about the event, visit triodayofservice.eventbrite.com.

TRIO programs at WSU annually serve over 4,800 persons in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties who are low income and the first in their families to traverse the financial, intellectual and cultural changes associated with degree completion.

“Or primary goal is to expose TRIO to staff, faculty and students while simultaneously increasing awareness among those who may be familiar with one program but unaware of the benefits provided through the other five WSU programs,” said Henry Robinson, senior director of Federal TRIO programs. “We are also working to honor the rich history and legacy of WSU TRIO programs successfully paving the way to college success for thousands of honorably discharged veterans of the armed forces, mature adults and high school students since 1966.”

WSU’s Federal TRIO programs reflect the nation’s commitment to providing educational opportunities for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance. In support of this commitment, Congress and the State of Michigan established a series of programs to help low-income students enter college, graduate and succeed. TRIO programs and initiatives include The Educational Opportunity Center, McNair Scholars, Talent Search, Upward Bound and Veterans Upward Bound.
