Detroit premiere of ‘Intelligent Lives’ documentary set for Oct. 18 at Wayne State University

The Detroit premiere of a new Dan Habib documentary is set for Thursday, Oct. 18. The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI) and Wayne State University College of Education are co-sponsoring the event on Wayne State’s main campus in Detroit.

The documentary, Intelligent Lives, stars three pioneering young American adults with intellectual disabilities — Micah, Naieer and Naomie — who challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college and the workforce. The film features Southeast Michigan native Micah Fialka-Feldman (photo) and is narrated by award-winning actor and parent of a son with disabilities, Chris Cooper.

Intelligent Lives challenges what it means to be intelligent, and points to a future in which people of all abilities can fully participate in higher education, meaningful employment and intimate relationships. The trailer can be viewed at intelligentlives.org/trailer

The Detroit premiere will begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 18, at the WSU Community Arts Center, 450 Reuther Mall, located off Cass Avenue. The film will begin at 6:15 p.m., following a brief welcome and introduction. After the film, MI-DDI Director Sharon Milberger will lead a panel discussion and question-and-answer session. The evening will conclude with a reception and refreshments.
