Wayne State co-hosts Detroit Peace in the Streets conference April 20-21

The Rotary Club of Detroit and Wayne State University’s Center for Peace and Conflict Studies will hold a two-day conference highlighting the root causes of violence in our communities. The conference, called “Peace in the Streets,” will take place April 20 and April 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days at Wayne State’s Law School, located at 471 W Palmer Ave. Interactive discussions will focus on three ways of attaining peace in the Detroit community: “Peace in the Hood,” “Peace in the Home” and “Peace in the Schools.”

The conference experts will teach participants a hands-on approach to better understand the roots of dangers and threats and offer constructive and preventative strategies applicable to attendees’ lives. Topics include police-community relations, ethnic and racial groups, domestic and partner violence, familial disputes, intergenerational relations, bullying, suicide prevention, diversity, and anger management. Concluding the conference, participants will engage in “Hands across the Mile Roads” with historians, civic leaders/officials and community members. This initiative demonstrates the desire for unity between the city and surrounding suburbs, and it will take place at the “Birwood Wall” in Northwest Detroit on Birwood Street and 8 Mile Road.

”Peace in the Streets” will include keynote speeches by Izzeldin Abuelaish, who is known internationally for his peacebuilding, Carl Taylor and other local and global experts in their fields. The cost to attend is $30 for adults and $15 for high school and college students. Parking is $7 and will be available across the street from the Law School in Structure 1.
