If you want to do your part for the environment, you will not want to miss Wayne State’s recycling workshop at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21. Staff and faculty participants will have the opportunity to get a recycling bin for their office. Attendees who live in Detroit can sign up to receive a free curbside recycling dumpster for their home.

The workshop will take place in the Student Center Building, room 384.

“This is a great opportunity for our campus community to get more involved in recycling both at work and at home,” said Daryl Pierson, Wayne State’s sustainability coordinator. “We’ve partnered with Green Living Science to bring this great opportunity to the campus. The free recycling dumpster is a real treat for those people who want to recycle at home but never got around to purchasing a dumpster from the city.”

Green Living Science is a local nonprofit organization that focuses on recycling education in Southeast Michigan.

The workshop will help participants learn more about recycling and its global impact, as well as provide information about Wayne State’s program. The event will challenge students, staff, faculty and the surrounding community to make a difference in the world by practicing waste recycling.

Participants will also learn about the importance of waste reduction and what they can do to help.

For example:

• Refillable water bottles are a good way to keep plastic out of landfills. Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour, most of which are thrown away. At the workshop, you can learn about the hydration stations installed around campus to help reduce the impact of plastic drinking bottles. 
• Annually, 9 million trees are cut down to be used for paper products. Learn how you can help reduce that number and make sure that your paper products do not end up in a landfill or the local incinerator.
