The Wayne State University College of Education will host its annual Education Job Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 5. Wayne State students and alumni who are seeking employment or interested in boosting their communication, interviewing and networking skills are encouraged to attend. Students and graduates from education programs at colleges and universities throughout the state, current education professionals, and others interested in pursuing careers in education are also welcome to participate in the event, which will be held on the main campus in the Student Center Ballroom.

“In keeping with our commitment to our students and to the community, we not only want to help our students find jobs after graduation, but we also strive to support local school districts and education-related organizations as they seek to fill available job openings,” said Janice Green, Ph.D., assistant dean of the Division of Academic Services. “Many recruiters are looking for people to work in high-need areas, and we hope they will connect with the right candidates through our job fair.”

Recruiters from throughout the Midwest, including out-of-state school districts, will interview candidates for a variety of positions in teaching, administration, counseling, nutrition, psychology, social work, special education, speech pathology and other areas. About 60 employers are expected to attend.

The job fair is free for participants who register online before May 3. Onsite registration is $10 (cash or check only).

“The college makes this event available to anyone interested in finding a career in education,” said Mary Waker, Ed.D., academic services advisor and coordinator of the event. “This includes students who may not be education majors but want to be counselors, social workers or librarians in schools. Recruiters are seeking enthusiastic, ambitious and service-oriented candidates who not only enjoy working with young people but are also critical thinkers, strong communicators and creative problem solvers. Education degrees equip people with a number of transferable skills that are valuable inside and outside the classroom.”

Attendees should bring multiple copies of their resume and cover letter. They should also dress in professional attire.

New this year is the addition of the Career Fair Plus app, a tool that allows participants to access job fair information and resources from their mobile devices. Individuals registered for the event will be able to view the list of recruiters, see floor plans, use filters to search, star favorite organizations, take notes and get tips for preparing cover letters and resumes, dressing for success, and interviewing.

“We want our students and other job seekers to be as successful as possible, so we wanted to improve communication with participants,” said Waker. “Making the layout, list of employers and other resources available weeks before the job fair allows students to research organizations, prepare potential questions and develop a strategy for navigating the fair effectively. We hope the app will alleviate some of the anxieties candidates often face as well as enhance the recruitment process for employers.”

Parking in Structure 5 is recommended. Participants who do not have a Wayne State University OneCard or parking tag will need a credit card for entry and exit. The cost is $7.50.
