Wayne State asks, which teacher made a difference in your life?

Almost all of us can look back and remember a time when a teacher changed our life. Was it in elementary school, high school, college? What did they do for you?

The Wayne State University College of Education is asking you to publicly recognize your favorite teacher by sharing your story at coe.wayne.edu/because-of-you. The website and accompanying video are part of a campaign called “Because of You, I…” aimed at reminding people of the difference teachers make, and to inspire people to consider a career in education. The video features current WSU education students.

Despite going to school for many years in preparation to become a physician and attending medical school at Harvard University, WSU President M. Roy Wilson recognizes Judy Stephan of Suitland High School in Prince Georges County, Maryland for changing his life because she, “Taught me how to write well; instilled in me an unquenchable thirst for knowledge; imprinted the importance of justice and fairness as guiding principles in my approach to life; made me believe I had special gifts (debatable) and that it was my responsibility to pursue consequential accomplishments for the greater good of society.”

Because of Stephan, Wilson says he “Dreamed big.”

The opportunity to publicly thank a teacher is open to everyone by sharing their story at coe.wayne.edu/because-of-you. Select submissions will be shared on the College of Education’s Facebook page, Facebook.com/WayneStateEducation. All submissions can be viewed at inspiringteachers.wayne.edu.

“Teaching is not the most glamorous or financially rewarding profession, but there’s a reason why polls consistently find it is one of the most satisfying professions in the world,” said R. Doug Whitman, dean of the College of Education. “Teachers make a difference in students’ lives and improve society as a whole, and that’s very fulfilling.”

The “Because of You, I” campaign also hopes to bring attention to other programs in the College of Education, such as kinesiology, community counseling, school counseling, rehabilitation counseling, school and community psychology, instructional technology and sport administration where you can also make a difference in people’s lives.
