What: A group of more than 150 volunteers organized by Wayne State University criminal justice students will come together for a daylong community service project throughout Detroit.
Who: Wayne State University's Criminal Justice Learning Community, Detroit Public School students, buildOn, Rodan and Fields.
When: Saturday, Nov. 21
- 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Community Volunteering (Detailed schedule below)
- 1 - 3 p.m. - Post-service volunteer program and lunch
Where: The group will spend the morning volunteering at several locations throughout Detroit including On The Rise Bakery; The Capuchin Soup Kitchen; the Tumaini Center; the Piquette Square for Veterans; and distributing Water Advocacy Project literature throughout Detroit.
Why: The Wayne State criminal justice students spearheading the project are part of the university's Justice and Society Learning Community. This day of service not only reinforces classroom-based lessons, but connects students with the community they may ultimately serve as the next law makers and law enforcement officials. The group has already participated in ride-alongs with the Detroit Police Department, courtroom observations at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice and toured underserved areas of Detroit with the Detroit Experience Factory.
Wayne State's learning communities were created to provide students with a greater connection to their studies, infusing camaraderie as they attend classes and events with like-minded Warriors and faculty. Each community provides study sessions, tutoring, peer mentors, and community service events.
