Art students compete for the Wayne State University Art Installation Award

Campus community and general public can vote online throughout the next four weeks

The James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History, Wayne State University, is pleased to present the WSU Art Installation Award, Sept. 15 through Oct. 10.

The WSU Art Installation Award is an opportunity for art students from the Department of Art and Art History to share their talent with the public. Students were invited to create temporary artworks under the restrictions of facility limitations and a strict deadline.

Temporary public art provides an out of the ordinary experience for the viewer. The artwork is perceived as a temporary reformulation of the architecture and its attendant landscape or urban-scape. Such site-specific work also provokes people who are experiencing the space on a daily basis to reconsider the manner in which they interact with their surroundings. New audiences, perhaps visiting the chosen site for the first time, are invited to become aware of the cultural heritage and art communities that contribute to the vitality of the university.

Awards are given to students for their successful art installations and will be presented during a reception at the Art Department Gallery on Oct. 9 from 3 to 4 p.m, coinciding with the SculptureX Symposium that is being hosted by the Art Department. More information about the symposium can be found at http://sculpturex.art.wayne.edu.

Visitors can vote online at http://facebook.com/events/1055644254463583 by simply liking the work that they feel is the best art installation. The artist(s) with the most likes will win. Online Facebook voting is live as of Sept. 15.

The James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History is a division of Wayne State's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, educating the next generation of visual artists, designers and art historians.

Wayne State University, located in the heart of Detroit's midtown cultural center, is a premier urban research university offering more than 380 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to nearly 28,000 students.
