Wayne State University advanced three spots in this year’s worldwide rankings to 189th among the 25,000-plus degree-granting institutions of higher education surveyed, according to a report released on July 17, 2015.

In the United States rankings, Wayne State moved up one place to 82 out of 229 institutions overall.

The rankings, provided by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), measure eight areas, including:

  • Quality of Education, measured by the number of university alumni who have won major international awards, prizes and medals relative to the university’s size.
  • Alumni Employment, measured by the number of university alumni who have held CEO positions at the world's top companies relative to the university's size.
  • Quality of Faculty, measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes and medals.
  • Publications, measured by the number of research papers appearing in reputable journals.
  • Influence, measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly influential journals.
  • Citations, measured by the number of highly cited research papers.
  • Broad Impact, measured by the university's h-index.
  • Patents, measured by the number of international patent filings.

“We are pleased about Wayne State’s movement upward in the ranks among degree-granting institutions worldwide, according to the Center for World University Rankings,” said Margaret E. Winters, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “The center measures institutions on the quality of education, training of students, prestige of faculty members and quality of research — all areas that are at the forefront of our strategic planning and expected outcomes.”
