Wayne State University expert available to comment about the mosquito season

The mosquito season in Michigan is now in full swing, including the risk of diseases such as the West Nile Virus.

Ann Sodja, associate professor in Wayne State University's Department of Biological Sciences, says mosquitoes are vectors for a number of viral or non-viral pathogenic agents causing diseases in humans or animals. "The disease spectrum is broad, including West Nile Virus, St. Louis-type encephalitis, equine encephalitis, malaria, yellow fever and dengue/dengue hemorrahgic fevers."

Sodja is prepared to talk about several topics involving mosquitoes including their lifespan, biting/feeding habits, preventive and protective measures in dealing with the insects and health risks to humans and animals.
