MetroArts Detroit: Season 4 to air June 21 on Detroit Public Television

DETROIT - The fourth season of MetroArts Detroit, produced at Wayne State University, will begin airing on Detroit Public Television, Channel 56, Sundays at 6:30 p.m., starting on June 21, 2015. Many shows will repeat on the following Tuesday at 5:30 am.

The new season of MetroArts Detroit includes 14 shows produced with Wayne State student crew members at the 5057 Midtown Studio. The Midtown Studio is a cooperative venture between Wayne State University's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts' Department of Communication and Detroit Public TV Channel 56.

MetroArts features artists from the Metropolitan Detroit area who represent the disciplines of visual, performing and communication arts. The musical guest on the first show is award-winning acoustic pop vocal duo Jane of Arc. In our checking-in segment, we'll revisit the work of artists from the Poor Man's Art Collective. Our other guest on the first show is video journalist Brian Kaufman who documented the historic Packard plant in Detroit. Guests in later shows include jazz crooner and songwriter Ben Sharkey, indie bands The Dearly Departed, Red Tape Riot, and Touch the Clouds, and pop, R&B vocalists such as Thornetta Davis, Alex Way and Maurissa Rose. We'll sample dance styles ranging from Jit and African to belly dancing and contemporary. We'll also meet voice artist, actor and impressionist Ed Kelly, international photojournalist Monica Morgan and the Cass Tech Harp and Vocal Ensemble.

The goal of the show is to bring awareness to up-and-coming artists as well as support those artists who've worked their entire lives in the Metro Detroit area by being arts advocates and taking active roles in their communities. Each show is comprised of three artist segments, with guests who talk about their current work and their future endeavors. Depending on the discipline, the artists either perform or showcase their creative works during their segments. This season's host is Wayne State student Sofia Sanchez. The producers are Kim Piper-Aiken, Gary Cendrowski and Kelly Gottesman.

Established in 1986, Wayne State's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts serves more than 2,500 students majoring in 16 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs through the Department of Communication, Department of Music, James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History and the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance. Episode 409 - Jazz Saxophonist and Songwriter Cameron Cullers, Special Effects Make-up Artist Donna Terwilliger, and Dance Instructor Kristi Faulkner and her dancers are featured

Episode 410 - The Co-Owners of Detroit Fiber Works Najma Wilson and Mandisa Smith, Doctor-turned Video Director Steven Karageanes, and Guitarist and Singer-Songwriter Briar Rabbit are featured
