To celebrate the one-year anniversary of her Reach Higher initiative, first lady Michelle Obama will speak at the first-ever citywide College Signing Day event for Detroit, hosted by the Detroit College Access Network. The event will be held Friday, May 1, in the Matthaei Physical Education Center.
More than 2,000 students from more than 40 Detroit high schools will be part of the rally. In her keynote remarks, the first lady will highlight the significance of pursuing and completing some form of higher education, and the importance of students doing their part to answer President Barack Obama’s call for America to once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world.
To celebrate high school students who have committed to college, individuals and organizations around the nation are hosting College Signing Day events on May 1. To date, more than 400 Signing Day events have been planned. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will attend a Signing Day event in Washington, D.C., and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro will attend a Signing Day event in Austin, Texas.
