Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Stephen Henderson will host WDET-FM 101.9’s Detroit Today, airing weekdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., beginning Monday, March 16.
“We are thrilled to welcome Stephen Henderson to the WDET team as host of Detroit Today,” said WDET General Manager Michelle Srbinovich. “A Detroit native and resident, Stephen is a trusted voice and a fantastic listener who recognizes the value in informing, engaging and connecting Detroiters around the issues that matter most to our community.”
Detroit Today brings listeners into the conversation each day with diverse voices that cover news, politics, community leaders and issues that define the region and state.
Henderson has been a reporter and editorial writer, and is currently editorial page editor for the Detroit Free Press. His resume also includes positions at the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader, the Chicago Tribune and the Baltimore Sun. Before returning to Detroit in 1997, he spent four years covering the U.S. Supreme Court for the Knight Ridder (now McClatchy) Washington Bureau.
“I'm really excited to join WDET as host of Detroit Today,” Henderson said. “I've been a listener since I was a kid, and that listening will be key to bringing my brand of civil discourse and inquiry to the air with listeners all over the metro area and the state.”
Last April, Henderson was awarded journalism's highest honor – the Pulitzer Prize – for commentary in the Detroit Free Press for his analysis and opinion of Detroit's financial crisis, an honest look at the challenges Detroit faces, and a hopeful roadmap for the future. He will continue as editorial page editor for the Free Press.
“Like WDET, Stephen is committed to moving our city and region forward,” Srbinovich said. “Detroit Today will continue to feature independent news and solutions-oriented conversations with diverse perspectives and voices. We are proud to have Stephen at the helm of this important show at a critical time in the city's history.”
Henderson is a graduate of University of Detroit High School and the University of Michigan.
WDET is a public service of Wayne State University.
