Wayne State University's Mortuary Science Program to host National Funeral Directors Association Certified Crematory Operator Program seminar

Detroit -- The Mortuary Science Program at Wayne State University today announced that it will host a National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) Certified Crematory Operator Program seminar on Wednesday, March 11. The continuing education program will be held in the auditorium of the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, located at 259 Mack Avenue (at John R) in Detroit. Registration and continental breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. The seminar runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Our faculty and students are pleased to bring this professional development program to Wayne State University because it provides students and alumni with the chance to learn from and network with one another as well as leaders in the funeral service industry," said Mark T. Evely, director of the mortuary science program. "It also reduces travel and training expenses for our students, alumni, NFDA and MFDA [Michigan Funeral Directors Association] members, and other funeral service professionals in metro Detroit. Hosting programs like this also helps others see firsthand the talent, leadership and promise of Detroit."

The Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is one of 14 sites in the nation offering the Certified Crematory Operation Program seminar, which provides required certification to funeral homes offering cremation services. NFDA representatives Mike Nicodemus, vice president of cremation services, and Mike Watkins, senior vice president of operations, will discuss topics such as best practices for safe, proper, and ethical crematory operations and excellence in service to cremation families. The training is useful to all funeral professionals, whether they own a crematory or use a third party. Eligible participants may receive up to seven continuing education credits.

"With cremation litigation on the rise, you must understand the steps you need to follow from the moment you take a decedent into your care until you deliver the cremated remains to the family. Even if you don't own a crematory, you will gain insight into the risks of using a third-party crematory and walk away with critical information to protect your firm and the families you serve," said NFDA Public Relations Manager Jessica Koth. "We are pleased to work with the Mortuary Science Program at Wayne State University to bring this important professional development program to funeral directors and mortuary science professionals and students throughout metro Detroit, the state of Michigan and the Midwest region."

Registration is $495 for members of the NFDA or MFDA and participants who are not funeral directors, $655 for nonmembers who are funeral directors, and $160 for student members. The fee includes a CCO manual, seminar presentation, continental breakfast, lunch, exam and scoring, and continuing education processing and certificate.
