The Wayne State University women's basketball team recently accomplished a feat no previous squad was able to do.
This season’s Warriors are the fifth-ranked Division II women’s team in the country – the highest ranking in program history – according to the latest Women’s Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today National Poll.
Wayne State (13-1 overall, 9-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) won its ninth consecutive contest on Jan. 17 after defeating Ohio Dominican University 86-76 at the Matthaei Center, propelling WSU into the national fifth-ranked spot.
The ninth-straight victory is tied for the fifth-longest streak in school history. It also marks the third consecutive year the Warriors have had at least a nine-game winning streak.
The team’s 13-1 start is tied for the second best in program history with the 1976-77 squad. The 1980-81 GLIAC Championship Warriors began their season with 11 wins and, following a loss at Oakland, rattled off nine more victories before a setback at Youngstown State.
Wayne State hits the road for three more road games to complete this stretch of six road contests in a seven-game span. WSU returns home on Jan. 31, when it will host Walsh University. The home game also will celebrate Warriors’ mascot W’s birthday during halftime with presents, cupcakes and birthday party games. W’s mascot friends (including the Tigers’ Paws and Lions’ Roary) will be in attendance.
