Wayne State a hot topic in 2014

In 2014, Wayne State University was mentioned in more than 2,400 stories from media outlets around the world – an average of seven articles daily. 

In 2014, Wayne State University was mentioned in more than 2,400 stories from media outlets around the world – an average of seven articles daily. 

News coverage extended from the Detroit area dailies, television and radio, to national media outlets such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, TIME Magazine, USA Today, National Journal, Chronicle of Higher Education, and beyond the U.S. to outlets located on nearly every continent of the globe.  

Included among the various print and electronic stories were 765 stories focused primarily, or exclusively, on the University – an 11 percent increase over 2013. These stories were often pitched or facilitated by WSU communications professionals.

National highlights included stories on the $750 million “Pivotal Moments” capital campaign; National Institute of Health’s $21.2 million federal grant to develop a program to steer more undergraduate students from underrepresented and economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue careers in biomedical research; New York Times article on new brain research from Wayne State’s School of Medicine; and ABC News (New York) story about Wayne State’s research in identifying distinct subtypes of childhood obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Local coverage included Detroit and Macomb County media covering the opening of the new technology education center in Warren; ribbon-cutting ceremony for the remodeled student veterans resource center at WSU; feature story examining the Integrative Biosciences Center (IBio); and an article about the multiple Wayne State University athletic teams earning NCAA Tournament spots.
