DETROIT - Doctors Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt and George Jenkins-- known as The Three Doctors -- will share their story of inspiration, dedication and determination during Wayne State University's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Luncheon on Friday, Jan.16, 2015.
The annual event kicks off at 10 a.m. at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, 3711 Woodward Ave. in Detroit.
The Three Doctors are extraordinary role models for anyone who's been through any kind of life challenge or major hardship. As teenage boys growing up on the tough inner-city streets of Newark, New Jersey, these three kindred spirits made a pact: they would stick together, go to college, graduate and become doctors.
Surrounded by negative influences and having few positive role models made this a difficult feat. Now many years later, the three men have overcome countless obstacles and proudly bear the subtitle of doctor, serving as the face of health and education for youth and families across the country.
"Each year, we aim to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, celebrate those making a positive difference and inspire the community," said WSU Director of Community Relations Victor Green. "The doctors exemplify those goals. They are living proof that anyone who sees possibility for their life can transform their circumstances and live their dreams.
In addition to the keynote address, the tribute includes a presentation of the Dr. Arthur L. Johnson Community Leadership Awards. This year's recipients are Robert Blumenfeld, chief financial officer for the Children's Center, and Street Medicine Detroit, a WSU student organization that provides access to quality medical care for Detroit's unreached and service resistant homeless population.
Tickets are $10 to attend the program only, $65 for the program and luncheon, and $500 for a 10-pack of program and luncheon tickets. Parking is free.
Net proceeds will support Adopt-A-Classroom, a nationally recognized organization that invites the community into classrooms to increase opportunity for student success by empowering teachers with partnerships and funds to purchase much-needed supplies. In partnership with sponsors, Wayne State has adopted 38 classrooms and donated nearly $40,000 to support the organization's local giving efforts.
