Colossal structures made of canned food are on display through Friday, Dec. 12, at the Welcome Center, 42 W. Warren, as part of the 2014 Detroit Canstruction design competition.
Thirteen teams, including one from Wayne State’s College of Engineering, participated this year. The following winners were announced during Noel Night:
- Facebook Fan Favorite: dPOP! for "MichiCAN: Mapping the Meal Gap"
- Honorable Mention: Neumann Smith and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for "Detroit Icon: Eastern Market"
- Best Meal: HKS, Inc. for "Transforming Detroit’s CANsportation"
- Best Use of Labels: dPOP! for "MichiCAN: Mapping the Meal Gap"
- Structural Ingenuity: SmithGroupJJR for "Hey, Hunger…We’ve Got Our Octop-EYE on You!"
- People's Choice: Partners in Architecture for "Lighting Lives, From Sea to Shining Sea"
- Juror's Favorite: Albert Kahn for "No More Empty Bowls"
More than 36,000 cans of food were collected and will be donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank on Saturday, Dec. 13.
Victor Green, WSU director of community relations, says volunteers are needed Saturday at 10 a.m. to break down the structures and pack food for delivery.

Canstruction® is a nonprofit organization that holds annual design and build competitions to benefit local food banks. Founded in 1992, the competitions are responsible for collecting over 25 million pounds of food for the communities in which it hosts events.
