The Community of Scholars, part of Wayne State University's Irvin D. Reid Honors College, is hosting its annual Community of Scholars Service Day, when the Community of Scholars (CoS) partners with a service organization to identify a societal need that students can assist in resolving. This year, the Community of Scholars will work side-by-side with Habitat for Humanity for their annual Blitz Build seven-day project starting on August 16, 2014.  Students, alongside with professional builders, will build, renovate, and repair a home in Detroit's Morningside neighborhood.  The house that the Community of Scholars builds during the week will be donated to a local family in need.  

"We are extremely proud of our students," said Jerry Herron, Dean of the Irvin D. Reid Honors College at Wayne State University. "The Community of Scholars experience includes engaging in community service activities, and the benefits to both the students and our community are tremendous." 

More than 30 Community of Scholars students are expected each day at this week-long event, as well as Honors students, staff, and faculty.  This year's Community of Scholars project is named, "The House that CoS Built", and will be under construction beginning August 16 and then from August 18 through 23, 2014. The CoS student team will work from 8:00 am-3:30pm each day at 3637 Lakepointe Street in Detroit.

"The students get a lot of personal satisfaction out of service projects like this one. Students commit to the tasks, work hard, and at the end of the day know they have made a positive impact in Detroit," said Community of Scholars coordinator Antonio Austin. 

The Community of Scholars is a service-oriented learning community of high-achieving students. Many students receive merit-based scholarships and are among the best prepared students entering Wayne State University. The Community of Scholars is always looking for volunteers to assist with community service events.
