The offices of the Vice President for Research, Provost and Faculty Affairs (School of Medicine) will host Communicating Your Research and Scholarship to a Broad Audience as part of the Professional and Academic Development seminar series.
The seminar is scheduled from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014, in the Welcome Center auditorium.
WSU faculty, chairs, directors, postdoctoral trainees and graduate students and administrators are encouraged to attend.
The moderator will be David Rosenberg, chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences. Panelists include Sean Lee, health reporter at WWJ Newsradio 950; John Corvino, chair of the Department of Philosophy; Julie O'Connor, director of research communications in WSU's Office of the Vice President for Research; Mike Brinich, associate director for national media in WSU's Office of Marketing & Communications; and Rasheda Kamaria Williams, information officer in WSU's Office of Marketing & Communications.
The panel will discuss:
- How WSU can help in communicating your latest accomplishment
- What types of stories interest reporters
- How to prepare for a media interview, beyond just knowing the facts
- How to translate your research to the general public
- Characteristics of a good media interview
- What to avoid doing in a media interview
- How to use social media to tell your story
- How to get an op/ed placement
