Winter 2014 is one for the record books, and we’re only half-way through. January was the state’s snowiest ever with 39 inches, and temperatures plummeted, with wind chills exceeding 30 degrees below zero. The extreme winter weather contributed to three university closures.
When snowfall is predicted, Wayne State’s winter grounds crew members mobilize, launching an assault on more than 200 acres of campus streets, parking lots and sidewalks. The 29-member crew — armed with 13 snow removal vehicles, snow blowers, shovels, plows and salt — often work 12-hour shifts around the clock until campus roadways and walkways are clear and safe.
So far, 200 tons of salt have been distributed throughout campus, nearing the 2013 season total of 287 tons. By comparison, 2012 season totals were 150 tons.
Donald Wrench, grounds interim director in the Department of Facilities Operation & Management, encourages employees to call 313-577-6954 to report unsafe areas or those requiring greater attention. “Above all, please be patient,” he says. “We’re working as quickly and safely as possible to clear the way for you.”
